JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Another dealer pushing poison onto the streets of Johnstown is off the grid. Ava Blackwell, 25, was sentenced to 108 months – nine years – in federal prison today for her role in a heroin distribution conspiracy. The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson, includes three years of supervised release following her incarceration.
The case, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines, details a short but impactful period of criminal activity. From August 25, 2016, to September 14, 2016, Blackwell conspired with an accomplice to move heroin within Cambria County. While the amount – less than 100 grams – might seem small, federal authorities say even that quantity fuels addiction and contributes to the region’s ongoing opioid crisis.
Court documents reveal Blackwell wasn’t operating alone. The investigation pointed to a co-defendant, whose name has not been released, working alongside Blackwell to both distribute the drug and possess it with the clear intention of further distribution. This suggests a small-scale operation, but one still capable of causing significant harm. The details of the co-defendant’s sentencing are currently unavailable.
United States Attorney Scott W. Brady, in a prepared statement, highlighted the collaborative effort that brought Blackwell to justice. He specifically commended the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cambria County Drug Task Force for their work in building the case and securing the conviction.
This sentencing serves as a grim reminder that federal authorities are actively targeting drug traffickers in Western Pennsylvania. While nine years isn’t a life sentence, it’s a substantial penalty designed to disrupt the flow of heroin and send a message to others considering a similar path. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat drug crime in the region.
Blackwell’s case is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Cambria County, like many areas across the nation, has been ravaged by the opioid epidemic. Law enforcement officials are under constant pressure to stem the tide of drugs entering the community and to hold those responsible accountable. The investigation into Blackwell’s network is ongoing, and authorities are hopeful it will lead to further arrests and seizures.
