BANGOR, Maine: A shocking case of vandalism and arson has come to an end in Oakland, Maine. In October 2018, a fire was set in a residential mailbox, sparking a series of events that would lead to the arrest and sentencing of 43-year-old Jonathan Charles Michaud.
According to Court Records, the Trail of Destruction Led Investigators to Michaud’s Home
In October 2018, law enforcement officers were called to an Oakland neighborhood where a fire had been set in a residential mailbox. The fire was not the only damage, as messages had been handwritten on bills addressed to different residences. One of these handwritten messages contained the telephone number of Michaud’s mother, with whom he resided. Investigators soon learned that several other mailboxes in the neighborhood had also been vandalized. A handwritten note was found in one mailbox stating, “Jonathan Charles is dead at my home, will find me dead in my room, bye mom and dad.” This chilling message raised suspicions, leading investigators to obtain a state search warrant for Michaud’s residence.
Evidence Mounts Against Michaud as Investigators Uncover Fingerprint and Handwriting Matches
The search warrant led to a breakthrough in the case, as investigators found evidence linking Michaud to the vandalized mailboxes. Fingerprint and handwriting matches confirmed Michaud’s involvement in the destruction of letter boxes. The case was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Maine Office of State Fire Marshal; and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Michaud Pleads Guilty, Receives Five Years of Probation
On May 24, 2021, Michaud pled guilty to the charges. U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. sentenced Michaud to five years of probation. The sentence marks the end of a long and complex case that began with a senseless act of vandalism and ended with justice being served.
A Community Left to Pick Up the Pieces
