Cedar Rapids Man Pleads Guilty to 2011 Robbery After Start of Federal Trial
A ruthless crime shook the streets of Cedar Rapids when a man robbed a Century cab on April 29, 2011. The suspect, Jonathan DeWayne Mitchell, 44, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has finally faced justice.
Mitchell was convicted of one count of interference with commerce by robbery, a serious federal offense. According to prosecutors, Mitchell robbed the cab driver, taking money and personal effects from her during the brutal attack.
The case took a grim turn when evidence revealed that the cab driver died of multiple stab wounds sustained during the robbery. The details of the crime are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement and innocent civilians.
Mitchell’s guilty plea came during the opening stages of his jury trial, after exhibits had been admitted and the jury was selected. The plea hearing marked a significant turn in the case, as Mitchell admitted to the crimes and accepted responsibility for his actions.
As per the plea agreement, Mitchell faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, restitution to the victim’s family, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. The court will set a sentencing date after a presentence report is prepared.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Patrick Reinert and Dillan Edwards, in collaboration with the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The swift and decisive action by law enforcement has brought a measure of closure to the victim’s family and the community.
