A Maryland man has been charged with defrauding a crypto exchange of over $50 million in hacks, according to the Department of Justice.
Jonathan Spalletta, 32, of Maryland, was charged with computer fraud and money laundering in connection with his hacks of the decentralized cryptocurrency exchange Uranium Finance, officials announced.
The indictment alleges that Spalletta, also known as ‘Cthulhon’ and ‘Jspalletta,’ used his hacking skills to defraud Uranium Finance of over $50 million in cryptocurrency.
United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, and Kevin Murphy, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations, San Diego, announced the unsealing of the indictment.
The indictment charges Spalletta with one count of computer fraud and one count of money laundering, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The investigation was led by the FBI’s San Diego Field Office, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations.
