Jonathan T. Lane, Arson, Plymouth WI, 2017

PLYMOUTH, WI – Jonathan T. Lane, 32, of Plymouth, Wisconsin, will spend the next ten years in federal prison for intentionally setting a fire that claimed the life of a mother of three and injured a first responder. The sentence, handed down May 10, 2023, by U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman, brings a measure of closure to a case that has haunted the small Wisconsin community since November 9, 2017.

Court documents reveal Lane admitted to starting the blaze in a two-story apartment building. The fire quickly engulfed the structure, leading to the tragic death of a resident and leaving a firefighter injured in the attempt to control the rapidly spreading flames. The apartment building was a total loss, and neighboring properties also sustained significant fire damage. Investigators quickly determined the fire wasn’t accidental.

Evidence pointed squarely at Lane, who was identified as the last person near the fire’s origin just minutes before smoke and flames were discovered. The painstaking work of arson investigators, utilizing fire science and technology, ultimately built an airtight case against him. The investigation involved a collaborative effort between the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Plymouth Police Department.

“The arson of an occupied building endangers the safety of others and can easily result in the injury or death of an innocent occupant or firefighter,” stated U.S. Attorney Gregory J. Haanstad of the Eastern District of Wisconsin. “The sentence in this case… makes clear that those responsible for such acts will receive substantial prison terms.” ATF Special Agent in Charge Christopher Amon of the Chicago Field Division echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in solving complex arson cases.

Beyond the decade behind bars, Lane will face three years of supervised release upon his eventual release. He’s also been ordered to pay restitution, the total amount of which is still being calculated, but is expected to exceed $400,000 to cover the damages inflicted. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul praised the work of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, acknowledging their specialized skills and dedication to justice.

The fire drew a massive response from numerous fire and rescue departments across the surrounding areas, battling the blaze and providing aid. While the sentence won’t bring back the life lost, it serves as a stark warning: deliberately endangering lives with fire will be met with the full force of the law. This case underscores the devastating consequences of arson and the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable.
