A chilling crime unfolded in Randolph County, West Virginia in February 2015 when Jonathon Schrader, 30, of Elkins, West Virginia, was found in possession of stolen explosives.
According to the indictment, Schrader planned to detonate the explosives at various locations in Elkins, including the Federal Building and during a musical performance at the Forest Festival.
Schrader, also known as ‘Hobo John,’ faces one count of ‘Possession of Stolen Explosives,’ a charge that could land him up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.00.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will determine the actual sentence imposed, taking into account the seriousness of the offense and Schrader’s prior criminal history, if any.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Camilletti is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation leading the investigation.
Other agencies, including the West Virginia State Police, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, United States Marshals Service, Federal Protective Services, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Department of Homeland Security, and the United States Secret Service, are also investigating.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of explosives in the wrong hands and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Schrader is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
