Jonnathan Tyler Lee, Gun Trafficking, Indiana 2020

MICHIGAN CITY, IN – Jonnathan Tyler Lee, 25, is headed to federal prison after admitting he repeatedly lied to gun stores to amass a stockpile of firearms, some of which ended up fueling violence on the streets of Chicago. U.S. District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty sentenced Lee to 18 months behind bars, followed by two years of supervised release, this week.

According to court documents, Lee wasn’t a casual collector. Between June 2020 and July 2021, he systematically purchased at least 19 guns from various shops across the Northern District of Indiana. Each time, he allegedly falsified the required ATF Form 4473, the document that verifies a buyer’s eligibility to own a firearm. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) traced several of Lee’s purchases to crime scenes in Chicago, a city already drowning in gun violence.

This wasn’t just about straw purchases; Lee’s guns were turning up in the hands of convicted felons and even being used in shootings. Investigators discovered at least one of the firearms Lee sold illegally was fired at a moving vehicle. The details paint a clear picture: Lee wasn’t interested in lawful gun ownership, but in supplying weapons to those who would misuse them. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerome W. McKeever prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that led to Lee’s guilty plea.

Federal officials are touting this case as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods, a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. But for many in Chicago, it’s a case of closing the barn door after the horses have bolted. The constant flow of illegal guns from neighboring states continues to plague the city, despite increased efforts to stem the tide.

The prosecution was also part of the Department of Justice’s Chicago Gun Trafficking Strike Force, launched in July 2021. The Strike Force aims to disrupt the pipeline of illegal firearms flowing into Chicago from source cities. This isn’t an isolated incident; the DOJ has established similar strike forces in New York, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington D.C., all attempting to choke off the supply of illegal guns.

While 18 months is a sentence, it barely scratches the surface of the damage Lee’s actions caused. The ATF’s Chicago Field Division continues to investigate the origins of the firearms and any potential co-conspirators. The question remains: how many more like Lee are out there, quietly fueling the gun violence that tears apart communities like Chicago, one false form 4473 at a time?
