DALLAS, TX – Curtis Wayne Rodgers, 41, is headed back to federal prison for 17 years after being sentenced Wednesday for illegally possessing a firearm. The conviction marks yet another chapter in a lengthy criminal history for the repeat offender, who already boasts 13 prior felony convictions.
According to court documents, Rodgers’ latest trouble began in June 2022, when Irving Police responded to reports of a burglary and aggravated assault. Witnesses stated Rodgers kicked in the door of a home, aggressively questioned neighbors about the homeowner’s whereabouts, and then brandished a firearm, ordering one neighbor inside and threatening him not to call for help. Surveillance footage captured Rodgers fleeing the scene in a black Ford F-150.
A subsequent search of Rodgers’ residence and vehicle turned up the weapon used in the incident. The discovery triggered a federal investigation, revealing a decades-long pattern of criminal behavior. Rodgers’ rap sheet includes more than three prior convictions for violent crimes and/or serious drug offenses – enough to trigger the harsh penalties of the Armed Career Criminal Act.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton, announced the sentencing, emphasizing the seriousness of Rodgers’ actions and the importance of keeping firearms out of the hands of repeat offenders. “This sentence reflects the gravity of Rodgers’ continued disregard for the law and the danger he posed to the community,” a statement from her office read.
Rodgers pleaded guilty in June 2023 to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. U.S. District Judge Ada Brown handed down the 17-year sentence Wednesday, taking into account Rodgers’ extensive criminal history. The investigation was a joint effort by the Irving Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Niedermair prosecuted the case.
