Bakersfield Man Sentenced to Over 7 Years in Prison for Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm
A 30-year-old man from Bakersfield, California, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Jorge Chavez was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison by United States District Judge Dale A. Drozd, announced Acting United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
According to court documents, Chavez was in possession of a Glock, Model 23, .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol in 2012 when he was encountered by law enforcement officers. Prior to his arrest, Chavez had been convicted in 2005 and 2007 in Kern County Superior Court of drug trafficking felonies.
The case was the result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bakersfield Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Melanie L. Alsworth prosecuted the case.
