A Mexican national has been convicted of his role in a massive money laundering scheme that funneled millions of dollars in drug trafficking proceeds from Texas to Mexico.
Jorge Luis Mora, 52, pleaded guilty on February 14, 2024, to conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carried a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.
According to court documents, Mora was part of a two-year, multimillion-dollar trade-based money laundering conspiracy that laundered drug trafficking proceeds through Texas to Mexico.
The scheme involved the use of shell companies and fake invoices to disguise the true nature of the transactions, allowing the proceeds to be laundered and eventually transferred to Mexico.
Mora’s guilty plea marked a significant blow to the operation, which had been under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Organized Crime and Gang Section, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and other law enforcement agencies.
The investigation, which was led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas, resulted in the seizure of millions of dollars in assets and the indictment of several others involved in the scheme.
As part of his plea agreement, Mora will forfeit $1.4 million in proceeds and is expected to be sentenced in May 2024.
The case highlights the ongoing threat of money laundering schemes that allow drug trafficking organizations to launder their proceeds and continue to operate with impunity.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s efforts to disrupt and dismantle these schemes are crucial in disrupting the flow of illicit funds and bringing those responsible to justice.
