Tax Preparer Sentenced to 84 Months in Prison for $1.2 Million Tax Refund Fraud Scheme
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Jorge Maldonado, 52, of Oviedo, Florida, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison and ordered to pay $1,203,073 in restitution for conspiracy, wire fraud, theft of government property, and aggravated identity theft.
Maldonado, along with his daughter Jennifer Maldonado, 29, Sharon Glover, 55, and Diane White, 54, conspired to obtain more than $1.2 million in income tax refunds issued on fraudulent tax returns between 2009 and 2011. The Maldonados filed fraudulent returns that generated refunds, while Glover and White cashed refund checks issued as a result of the fraudulent returns.
The group used fraudulent powers of attorney, approximately 16 different forged notary seals, and forged taxpayer signatures to carry out their scheme. The Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation conducted an investigation into the case, which resulted in the convictions of the Maldonados and the guilty pleas of Glover and White.
“When fraudsters submit fraudulent tax returns, they are actually stealing from the millions of honest taxpayers who fulfilled their tax obligations accurately and on time,” said United States Attorney Christopher P. Canova. “My office is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to ensure that tax dollars are used for their intended purpose.”
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida prosecuted the case, with Assistant United States Attorneys Herbert S. Lindsey and Gary K. Milligan handling the prosecution.
Maldonado’s co-defendants, Jennifer Maldonado, Sharon Glover, and Diane White, are scheduled to be sentenced later this month. Jennifer Maldonado is set to be sentenced on April 19 at 10:00 a.m., while Sharon Glover and Diane White are set to be sentenced on April 20 at 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m., respectively.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is committed to protecting the integrity of the tax system and bringing to justice those who seek to defraud it.
