Jorie Malcolm Cavanaugh, Methamphetamine Distribution, South Dakota 2017

Jorie Malcolm Cavanaugh, a 27-year-old woman from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced for her involvement in the distribution of a controlled substance. On May 15, 2017, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence.

Cavanaugh was found guilty of Distribution of a Controlled Substance, a charge stemming from her actions on July 7 and July 8, 2016, in Eagle Butte. According to court documents, she distributed methamphetamine, a Schedule II Controlled Substance, on three separate occasions.

The investigation into Cavanaugh’s activities was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services Narcotics Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan was responsible for prosecuting the case.

Cavanaugh’s sentence includes six months of home confinement at her parent’s home in Eagle Butte or at another residence outside of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Indian Reservation. This period of confinement is to commence within 30 days of the Court’s Judgment Order. Additionally, she will serve four years of probation and pay a $500 fine, along with a $100 mandatory special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims’ Fund.

Cavanaugh was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 14, 2016. She pleaded guilty to the charges on February 21, 2017.

Following her sentencing, Cavanaugh was released from custody. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of controlled substances in South Dakota and the consequences faced by those involved in such activities.
