On December 15, 2021, a federal grand jury in the United States District Court for the Central District of California (CAED) indicted Jose Antonio Castro on multiple counts of violent crimes. The charges included possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of an unregistered firearm, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
According to court documents, Castro, a 35-year-old Los Angeles resident, was previously convicted of a felony in 2015 for assault with a deadly weapon. As a result, he was barred from possessing firearms under federal law. Despite this, Castro was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol and a 12-gauge shotgun on February 10, 2021.
The indictment alleged that Castro used the firearms in connection with a narcotics trafficking operation in the Los Angeles area. The operation allegedly involved the distribution of heroin and methamphetamine.
Castro was taken into custody on February 10, 2021, and has since been held without bail pending trial. The case was set to go to trial in the United States District Court for the Central District of California in 2022.
On March 18, 2022, Castro entered a plea agreement, pleading guilty to charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. In exchange for his guilty plea, the government agreed to dismiss the remaining counts. Castro was sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
