A Salvadoran National Faces Justice for Preventing Removal from the US
NEW ORLEANS – In a shocking turn of events, Jose Armando Villalobos, a 49-year-old citizen of El Salvador, has been sentenced to serve 12 months in federal prison for preventing or hampering his departure from the United States. This crime, which occurred on July 25, 2019, resulted in Villalobos fleeing immigration officers as they tried to arrest him.
As per the indictment, Villalobos had an order of removal pending against him from a U.S. Immigration Court. The indictment clearly states that this was a deliberate act to evade justice, as he knew that he had an outstanding order of removal.
The maximum term of imprisonment for this crime is four years, with a maximum fine of $250,000 and a maximum term of supervised release of one year. Additionally, Villalobos faced a mandatory $100 special assessment.
U.S. Attorney Peter Strasser praised the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security in investigating this matter. He commended their dedication and professionalism in bringing Villalobos to justice.
Assistant U. S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis is in charge of the prosecution, and his efforts have been instrumental in securing the conviction.
Villalobos’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of respecting the law and the consequences of evading justice. His sentence serves as a warning to those who would attempt to defy the system.
