A former resident of the Bronx, New York, has landed in hot water after a federal court sentenced him to nearly four years in prison for cocaine trafficking. The defendant, Jose Baez Cabrera, was found guilty of possessing with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.

Chief United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the sentence on Jose Baez Cabrera, 35, who was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term, pending his removal from the United States based on his immigration status.

According to court documents, Jose Baez Cabrera was caught transporting eight kilograms of cocaine across Pennsylvania with the intent to deliver them to drug dealers in Erie on August 16, 2023. At the time of his arrest, he was on probation following a 2021 felony conviction in New York for possessing a kilogram of fentanyl.

AUSA Craig W. Haller prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States, securing a conviction against the defendant. U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti commended the Pennsylvania State Police and Drug Enforcement Administration for their investigation, which led to the successful prosecution of Jose Baez Cabrera.
