Gun-Toting Fugitive Gets 12 Months Behind Bars
LAFAYETTE, La. – In a shocking turn of events, a Mexican national has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for illegally possessing a revolver and a shotgun.
Jose Daniel Molina, 36, of Veracruz, Mexico, was found guilty of the federal charge on January 29, 2019. The crime took place on December 2, 2018, when Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of shots being fired near a residence in Duson, Louisiana.
Upon further investigation, officers found a Mossberg 20-gauge shotgun in plain view in the backseat of Molina’s vehicle and a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver with three live rounds and three empty casings nearby. Molina was later taken into custody and revealed to Homeland Security agents that he had entered the country illegally in 2000.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, ATF and Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Ayo prosecuting the case.
Molina’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking U.S. laws. The defendant’s actions put the community at risk and demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
