TUCSON, Ariz. – In a brazen attempt to smuggle thousands of rounds of ammunition into Mexico, 56-year-old Jose Herrera Daniel has been charged with a serious crime. According to a complaint filed on May 14, 2025, Daniel attempted to export 6,399 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition from the United States into Mexico through the port of entry in Douglas, Arizona.

The alarming incident occurred on May 13, 2025, when a United States Customs and Border Protection K-9 officer, trained to detect weapons, ammunition, and currency, alerted to Daniel’s vehicle. Officers then conducted a search and discovered thousands of rounds of ammunition in plastic bags hidden in the vehicle.

A criminal complaint is not the same as a conviction, and Daniel is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the charges against Daniel are serious, and if convicted, he could face significant consequences.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
