A Mexican man, identified as Jose Lopez-Sanchez, has been indicted for smuggling nearly $1.6 million in fentanyl and other drugs into the United States.
According to authorities, Lopez-Sanchez was apprehended on February 11, 2024, at the Lincoln Juarez Bridge port of entry in Laredo, Texas, while attempting to travel into the country.
He allegedly gave an inconsistent statement at primary inspection and was sent to secondary for further questioning. A K-9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics, and an X-ray scan revealed anomalies behind the vehicle’s firewall and rear passenger seats.
Upon physical examination, law enforcement discovered a total of 30 bundles of meth, weighing approximately 17.78 kilograms; one bundle of heroin; and eight bundles of fentanyl, weighing 1.2 and 11.28 kilograms, respectively.
The estimated combined street value of the seized drugs is approximately $1,585,855.
If convicted, Lopez-Sanchez faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison, as well as a possible $10 million maximum fine.
The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Makens is prosecuting the case.
