Tyler, Texas – A shocking tale of repeated crime and disregard for the law has unfolded in the Lone Star State. Jose Luis Rosales-Betancourt, a 39-year-old Mexican national, has been indicted for unlawfully reentering the United States, announced Eastern District of Texas Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
The indictment alleges that Betancourt was twice previously deported in 2008 and 2013. Public records also reveal that Betancourt was previously convicted in 2006 of aggravated robbery in Smith County, after which he received a five-year prison sentence. His criminal history continued with another conviction in 2012 for illegal reentry following removal in the Eastern District of Texas, for which he was sentenced to 30 months.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling the invasion of illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. The effort streamlines resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
According to officials, if convicted, Betancourt faces up to 20 years in federal prison and deportation. The investigation is being led by Homeland Security Investigations-Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Lucas Machicek handling the prosecution.
The indictment is not evidence of guilt, and Betancourt is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of repeated crime and the importance of enforcing immigration laws.
As the nation grapples with the complexities of immigration and crime, this case highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing these issues. The people of Texas and the United States demand justice and accountability from those who would undermine our laws and threaten our communities.
