Jose Torres, Prostitution Trafficking, New Jersey 2023

Newark, NJ – In a shocking case of human exploitation, Jose Torres, a 46-year-old Middlesex County man, was sentenced to 311 months in prison for persuading, inducing and enticing women to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution.

The case, which dates back to 2015, involved Torres targeting female victims, often commercial sex workers, from out-of-state locations including Canada and New York. He would lure them to New Jersey with promises of large sums of payment, only to refuse to pay them once they arrived. The victims were often subjected to physical and sexual assault.

Torres’ actions, which continued until 2019, have left a trail of destruction in their wake. The victims, who have not been named, have suffered physical and emotional trauma as a result of Torres’ crimes.

A six-day trial was held in U.S. District Court in Newark, where Torres was found guilty on all four counts of the second superseding indictment. The trial was a result of a lengthy investigation by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger praised the efforts of the investigative agencies, stating that their work has brought a predator to justice. The sentence imposed by Judge Brian R. Martinotti is a testament to the seriousness with which the law takes crimes of this nature.

The sentence includes 15 years of supervised release and a $5,000 special assessment for trafficking. Torres’ actions have sent shockwaves through the community, and it is hoped that his sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who would engage in similar crimes.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. It is only through the bravery of victims and the tireless efforts of law enforcement that such cases can be brought to justice.
