Houston Bank Robber Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison
A Houston bank robber has been ordered to serve 108 months in federal prison for his role in a brazen bank heist. Jose Vasquez Selio Jr., 23, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bank robbery charges in September 2013.
The crime took place on May 14, 2013, at the Wells Fargo Bank located at 5175 West 34th Street in Houston. Selio, who had been briefly employed by the bank, used a key provided by co-defendant Kederly Nataly Portillo, 19, to gain entry into the bank. He then restrained a teller using zip ties and forced her to open the vault.
Selio made several threats during the robbery, including ‘I’m not going to jail,’ ‘If ya’ll move I swear to God I’ll kill ya’ll,’ and ‘don’t make me do anything I will regret!’ The teller described Selio as ‘relaxed’ and ‘laughing’ during the robbery, despite his menacing behavior.
At the time of Selio’s earlier plea, both he and Portillo admitted to knowingly conspiring to rob the Wells Fargo Bank. Portillo, who was an employee of the bank, pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge and is scheduled to be sentenced on February 28, 2014.
The investigation into the robbery was conducted by the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force, which is comprised of personnel from the FBI, Houston Police Department, and Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Joe Porto is prosecuting the case.
Selio has been in custody since his arrest and will remain there to serve his 108-month sentence. Portillo, on the other hand, has been permitted to remain on bond pending her sentencing.
Additional testimony was presented at the hearing, including that of the Wells Fargo branch manager, who stated that Selio had been fired due to suspicion of theft.
