Man Sentenced for Brazen Bank Robbery in Mobile, Alabama
Mobile, AL – In a shocking turn of events, 67-year-old Joseph Deric Nelson of Moss Point, Mississippi, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for his role in a brazen bank robbery that took place on March 19, 2025, in Mobile, Alabama.
Nelson, disguised himself and entered a Family Security Credit Union branch located in Mobile, Alabama, where he passed a teller a note demanding money. The note stated that he was armed with a gun and explosives. The teller, fearing for their safety, placed cash into an envelope and gave it to Nelson.
However, the tables turned when a witness from the bank followed Nelson on foot and then followed his vehicle. The witness was able to flag down Mobile Police Officers who quickly took Nelson into custody.
According to court documents, Nelson will serve 37 months in the Bureau of Prisons before being released on a supervised release term of three years. This sentence serves as a stern warning to those who would seek to exploit and harm innocent citizens through brazen acts of crime.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the Mobile Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice Blackwood prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
U.S. Attorney Sean Costello of the Southern District of Alabama made the announcement, reaffirming the commitment of the U.S. government to protecting its citizens and bringing perpetrators to justice.
