LOS ANGELES – Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, a former Pacific Palisades resident, is facing a significantly escalated case after a federal grand jury indicted him today for allegedly igniting the January 2025 Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive blazes in Los Angeles history. The indictment adds two felony charges to his existing criminal complaint, ratcheting up the potential consequences for the alleged arson.
Rinderknecht, also known as “Jonathan Rinder” and “Jon Rinder,” is now charged with one count of destruction of property by means of fire, one count of arson affecting property used in interstate commerce, and one count of timber set afire. He’s been cooling his heels in federal custody since his arrest on October 7th, and an arraignment is expected in the coming weeks at United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. If convicted on these charges, Rinderknecht faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison.
Federal investigators have painstakingly pieced together the events leading up to the Palisades Fire, revealing it was a “holdover” from the Lachman Fire, which initially broke out on New Year’s Day 2025. While firefighters quickly contained the initial Lachman Fire, embers continued to smolder beneath the surface, within the root systems of dense vegetation. A week later, heavy winds reignited the underground fire, creating the devastating Palisades Fire that ravaged the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.
The evidence against Rinderknecht isn’t based on speculation. Law enforcement built their case using a mountain of data: witness statements, video surveillance, cellphone location data, and detailed analysis of fire dynamics and burn patterns at the scene. They determined he maliciously set the Lachman Fire just after midnight on January 1st, on land owned by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA), an organization that receives federal funding. The subsequent Palisades Fire then spread to federal property. Adding to the damning evidence, Rinderknecht was working as an Uber driver on the night of December 31, 2024, and passengers reported he appeared agitated and angry during separate trips between 10:15 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.
The timeline is damning. After dropping off a passenger in Pacific Palisades, Rinderknecht drove towards Skull Rock Trailhead, parked, attempted to contact a former friend, and hiked up the trail. He then used his iPhone to record videos of the area while listening to a rap song – a track he’d repeatedly played in the days prior – featuring imagery of things being set ablaze. At 12:12 a.m., sensors detected the start of the Lachman Fire. Rinderknecht then made multiple failed 911 calls, claiming he discovered the fire only after it had already begun, but geolocation data placed him just 30 feet from the ignition point as it rapidly grew. He even drove to the scene in his car, passing fire engines responding to the blaze, then parked and watched the firefighters at work, continuing to record videos.
During a January 24th interview, Rinderknecht allegedly lied to law enforcement about his location when he first spotted the fire, claiming he was near the bottom of the trail. The indictment serves as a stark reminder that attempts to mislead investigators will be met with the full force of the law. An indictment is not a finding of guilt, and Rinderknecht is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the evidence presented paints a disturbing picture, and the stakes are incredibly high for the alleged arsonist.
