Lewiston man Joseph Dobie, 36, has been charged with a string of offenses related to an alleged identity theft scheme.
According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Portland, Maine, Dobie is accused of committing aggravated identity theft, making false statements relating to health care matters, and unlawfully using Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The charges are part of the 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown, a nationwide law enforcement action that resulted in 324 defendants facing charges for their alleged participation in health care fraud and illegal drug diversion schemes.
The total intended loss in these schemes is estimated to be over $14.6 billion.
The government seized over $245 million in cash, luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and other assets as part of the takedown.
Dobie’s case is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General, with assistance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General, the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
A complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
In the meantime, Dobie’s charges stand as a stark reminder of the gravity of identity theft and Medicaid fraud in the United States.
