Joseph Garrison, 61, Charged for Hacking Fantasy Sports and Betting Website in New York

A Wisconsin man, Joseph Garrison, has been charged with hacking into a fantasy sports and betting website, stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from tens of thousands of victims.

According to the Southern District of New York, Garrison, 61, launched a ‘credential stuffing attack’ on the Betting Website on November 18, 2022. He used a large list of stolen credentials, which he obtained from other large-scale data breaches, to access approximately 60,000 accounts at the Betting Website.

Garrison and his co-conspirators successfully stole approximately $600,000 from approximately 1,600 victim accounts. They were able to add a new payment method on the account, deposit $5 into that account, and then withdraw all the existing funds in the Victim Account through the new payment method.

Law enforcement executed a search on Garrison’s home in February 2023 and located programs typically used for credential stuffing attacks, along with nearly 40 million username and password pairs on his computer. They also found conversations between Garrison and his co-conspirators discussing how to hack the Betting Website and profit from it.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, ‘As alleged, Garrison used a credential stuffing attack to hack into the accounts of tens of thousands of victims and steal hundreds of thousands of dollars. Today, thanks to the work of my Office and the FBI, Garrison learned that you shouldn’t bet on getting away with fraud.’

The FBI Assistant Director in Charge, Michael J. Driscoll, added, ‘Cyber intrusions aiming to steal private individuals’ funds represent a serious risk to our economic security. Combatting cyberattacks and holding the responsible threat actors accountable in the criminal justice system remains a top priority for the FBI.’

Garrison surrendered in New York City on the morning of the unsealing of the six-count criminal Complaint and will be presented before United States Magistrate Judge James L. Cott in the afternoon.
