SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A brazen bank heist has shaken the quiet streets of Springfield, Mo. Joseph K. Meierotto, 49, of Monett, Mo., has been charged with robbing a Great Southern Bank branch at gunpoint.
The crime took place on June 14, 2013, at approximately 5 p.m. According to an affidavit filed in support of the federal criminal complaint, Meierotto initially entered Great Southern Bank, 507 E. Kearney St., Springfield, under the pretense of conducting bank business.
Meierotto left the bank and allegedly returned a short time later carrying a gun and demanding cash. The stolen vehicle he used to escape has since been recovered. Meierotto, however, remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Federal authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Meierotto. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is encouraged to contact the FBI at (417) 882-3303.
U.S. Attorney Tammy Dickinson cautioned that the charge contained in this complaint is simply an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charge must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Mohlhenrich is leading the prosecution. The case was investigated by the FBI.
The charge against Meierotto is bank robbery, a federal offense. The city of Springfield and the surrounding areas are on high alert as authorities work to apprehend the fugitive.
Meierotto’s exact whereabouts are unknown, and his current status is that of a fugitive from justice. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any information that may lead to his capture.
