A Joplin man has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for producing child pornography.
Joseph William Colvin, 26, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool to 27 years in federal prison without parole. The court also sentenced Colvin to spend the rest of his life on supervised release following incarceration.
According to court documents, Colvin was arrested on October 13, 2015, for sexually abusing a 7-year-old victim from April 20 through July 10, 2014. He admitted to recording video of the abuse with his cell phone and possessing child pornography that he downloaded from the Internet.
Law enforcement officers seized Colvin’s laptop computer, an external hard drive and a cell phone, which must be forfeited to the government.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ami Harshad Miller. It was investigated by the Jasper County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department and the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force.
Colvin pleaded guilty to the sexual exploitation of a child on October 13, 2015. He was sentenced on April 20, 2016, with a sentence of 27 years in federal prison without parole and a lifetime of supervised release.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
