A Syracuse man has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for his role in a marijuana distribution conspiracy and money laundering scheme. Joshua Francis, 32, of Hogansburg, NY, was sentenced on January 17, 2023 for conspiring to distribute marijuana and for money laundering of drug proceeds.
According to prosecutors, Francis admitted to smuggling bulk quantities of marijuana from Canada into the United States via the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation in New York State between January 2017 and August 2017. He then directed couriers in the United States to deliver the marijuana to redistributors in the Syracuse area and elsewhere, and also collected the proceeds from marijuana sales.
Francis distributed at least 317 kilograms of marijuana during this time.
In addition to his prison sentence, Francis was also ordered to pay a money judgment in the amount of $501,850 representing proceeds derived from marijuana distribution. He will also serve four years of supervised release after his prison term.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the U.S. Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), the Syracuse Police Department, and the Oswego County Drug Task Force.
Francis was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas Sutcliffe.
The charges against Francis include conspiracy to distribute marijuana and money laundering. He is currently serving his sentence in a federal prison.
