New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Senior United States District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle dropped the hammer on February 1, 2023, sentencing Joshua Reed, 24, to five years in the slammer for being a felon in possession of a gun.
Reed’s misdeeds came to light when NOPD officers pulled him over at a gas station in New Orleans East. During a search, they stumbled upon a Glock pistol, which Reed confessed he owned. His previous conviction for burglary, a felony, didn’t help his case either.
The sentence, handed down by Judge Lemelle, also includes three years of supervised release post-prison. Reed was ordered to fork over a $100 special assessment fee as well.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the government’s initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN focuses on fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The NOPD and FBI had a hand in the investigation, while Assistant United States Attorney David Haller of the Violent Crime Unit prosecuted the case.
