Juan Aranda-Lara, 38, a citizen of Mexico, has pleaded guilty to a charge of violating federal immigration laws in a federal court in ERIE, Pa.
According to the United States Attorney Scott W. Brady, Aranda-Lara pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Susan Paradise Baxter. The guilty plea is in connection with Aranda-Lara’s unlawful presence in the United States on or about December 17, 2018.
The court was advised that Aranda-Lara had been previously ordered deported and removed from the United States on May 11, 2001, and was removed from the United States on May 15, 2001, September 29, 2009, November 14, 2009, November 24, 2009, December 1, 2009, and November 20, 2014. Despite these removals, Aranda-Lara reentered the United States without the permission of the Attorney General of the United States or his successor, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Judge Baxter has scheduled sentencing for August 22, 2019, at 11 a.m. The law provides for a total sentence of two years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Marshall J. Piccinini is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation that led to the prosecution of Aranda-Lara was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The guilty plea of Juan Aranda-Lara highlights the ongoing issue of illegal re-entry into the United States. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing federal immigration laws and the consequences of violating these laws. As the sentencing approaches, it remains to be seen what punishment Aranda-Lara will face for his actions.
In a statement, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady reiterated the commitment of his office to enforcing federal laws, including those related to immigration. The prosecution of Aranda-Lara demonstrates the efforts of law enforcement agencies to address the issue of illegal immigration and to hold individuals accountable for their actions.
