On June 4, 2019, the United States Department of Justice announced that Juan Carlos Perez, a 32-year-old resident of Los Angeles, California, had been arrested and charged with various federal crimes in connection with a violent crime spree that left several individuals injured and one dead. Perez was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and subsequently charged with one count of murder in aid of racketeering, one count of attempted murder in aid of racketeering, and one count of conspiracy to commit violent crimes in aid of racketeering.
The charges against Perez were filed in the Central District of California, United States District Court, where he was arraigned on June 6, 2019. If convicted, Perez faced a maximum of life imprisonment for the murder charge, 20 years for the attempted murder charge, and 10 years for the conspiracy charge. The court also ordered Perez to be held without bail pending trial.
The case against Perez was the result of an investigation by the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies. The investigation, which began in May 2019, revealed that Perez was allegedly involved in a violent gang and had committed the crimes as part of a larger racketeering scheme.
The outcome of the case was a guilty verdict on all charges on August 2020. Perez was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the murder charge and 10 years for the conspiracy charge, to be served consecutively. The attempted murder charge was taken into account as part of the sentencing for the murder charge.
