Amarillo Man Faces 14 Years in Prison for Methamphetamine Distribution
A 40-year-old Amarillo man is headed to federal prison for 14 years after pleading guilty to Methamphetamine Distribution charges. Juan Daniel Mares, 40, was sentenced to 168 months in federal prison for his role in distributing the illicit substance.
Mares was arrested on September 13, 2016, and has been in custody ever since. He pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine in January 2017.
According to court documents, Mares attempted to sell one pound of methamphetamine to an undercover Texas Department of Public Safety agent at a Walmart store in Canton, Texas, back on September 10, 2015. The undercover agent, posing as a buyer, met with Mares in the parking lot and was handed a shoebox containing 446 grams of the illicit substance in exchange for $6,100.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, Drug Enforcement Administration, Amarillo Police Department, Potter County Sheriff’s Office, and Randall County Sheriff’s Office all contributed to the investigation that led to Mares’ arrest.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Frausto and Sean Taylor prosecuted the case against Mares, who will now spend 14 years behind bars for his role in the methamphetamine distribution ring.
The harsh penalty handed down to Mares serves as a warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade: the consequences are severe and the law will not hesitate to take action.
