Miami Man Sentenced to 121 Months in Prison for Credit Card Information Theft
A Miami man has been sentenced to 121 months in prison for his role in purchasing, selling, and using stolen credit card information.
Juan Javier Cardenas, 45, was sentenced to 121 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge K. Michael Moore, who also ordered Cardenas to serve 3 years of supervised release following his prison term, pay restitution in the amount of $106,915, and pay a money judgment of $350,000.
According to court documents, Cardenas admitted to purchasing stolen credit card information from a co-conspirator using the Internet from February 2008 through May 2009. He then resold that information to others who used it to make fraudulent credit card purchases.
On May 27, 2009, U.S. Secret Service agents searched Cardenas’ house and found 26,669 credit card numbers stored on his computer.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service, with the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.
Prosecutors Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Osborne and Trial Attorney Joseph E. Springsteen of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section handled the case.
Cardenas’ crimes carry a significant financial impact, with the victims of his scheme facing estimated losses of $106,915.
