NEW ORLEANS — Junieth Betanco-Hernandez, an 18-year-old native of Nicaragua, has been charged with a serious crime that could put her behind bars for years.
Betanco-Hernandez was indicted on June 2, 2023, for illegally using a social security number to maintain her status in an Alternative to Detention program of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in violation of Title 42, United States Code, Section 408(a)(7)(B), announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
The indictment alleges that Betanco-Hernandez knowingly used a social security number that did not belong to her, in order to avoid detention. This is a serious offense that could result in severe consequences.
Betanco-Hernandez faces a maximum term of imprisonment of not more than five (5) years, a fine of up to $250,000.00, up to three (3) years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00.
U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement in investigating this matter.
Assistant United States Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr.of the General Crimes Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
This case serves as a reminder that immigration laws are in place to protect our country and its citizens. Betanco-Hernandez’s actions will now be subject to scrutiny, and the consequences of her actions could be severe.
