Five Inmates Charged with Possessing Cell Phones in Federal Prison
WILMINGTON, NC – In a move aimed at boosting public safety, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina has indicted five federal inmates for possessing cell phones in prison.
The defendants, JAMES BOSTIC (45), MAURICE KNIGHT (38), MICHAEL MARSHALL (40), KAVIN DATRON WILLIAMS (35), and JURHON LEE ROBINSON (44), were all serving federal sentences at Butner Correctional Institute in Butner, NC.
The indictment alleges that the inmates were found in possession of a prohibited cell phone while serving their sentences. If convicted, each faces a maximum of one year in prison, a fine of up to $100,000, and one year of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U.S. Attorney John Stuart Bruce stated that the possession of cell phones by prisoners poses a threat to both correctional officers and the general public. He vowed to prosecute such cases vigorously.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Prisons, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina handling the prosecution.
The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charges and allegations contained in the indictment are merely accusations.
