Jury Hands Down 10-Year Sentence to Jackson Man for Gun Possession
A Jackson man has found himself on the wrong side of the law after being sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Travaris Devon Bishop, 36, was arrested by the Jackson Police Department on January 9, 2020, with a firearm in his possession.
According to court documents, Bishop was under investigation for criminal activity in a local neighborhood when he was apprehended by law enforcement. The arrest was the culmination of a probe into the neighborhood, which yielded some surprising results. Bishop had two previous convictions for house burglary, making him ineligible to possess a firearm.
The case against Bishop gained momentum when he was charged in a federal criminal indictment on August 11, 2021, for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He subsequently pleaded guilty on July 12, 2021, paving the way for his sentencing.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn Murray handling the prosecution. This case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which aims to reduce violent crime through targeted enforcement and community partnerships.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is an evidence-based program that has proven effective in reducing violent crime. By pooling resources and expertise, stakeholders can identify and address the root causes of violent crime, ultimately leading to safer communities. In this case, the focus was on holding accountable those who pose a threat to public safety.
Bishop’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of violating the law. As a convicted felon, he was well aware of the prohibition on firearm possession. His actions not only put himself at risk but also put others in harm’s way. The sentencing serves as a deterrent to those who would follow in his footsteps, while also bringing closure to the community affected by his actions.
The case against Bishop is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement and prosecutors to keeping communities safe. By working together, they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.
