The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana has been rocked by a Twitter scandal, as officials announced the launch of a new Twitter account to keep citizens informed about news, events, and special announcements.
"We want to use social media in a responsible fashion to ensure that justice reaches all citizens of Southeast Louisiana," said U.S. Attorney Kenneth Allen Polite, Jr.
The move, however, has been met with skepticism by many, who question the motives behind the office’s decision to join Twitter. "The Office’s Twitter account will help inform the public about the work we are doing with taxpayer dollars," Polite added. "Further, increased awareness of our efforts will have a deterrent effect on crime."
The U.S. Attorney’s Office Twitter account, @EDLAnews, can be found at http://twitter.com/EDLAnews, or added to your smartphone Twitter app. In addition to Twitter, the office also maintains a website that is the primary source of information relating to all functions of the office, located at http://www.justice.gov/usao/lae.
The move is seen as a bold step by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, but critics argue that it may do more harm than good. "This is just a publicity stunt," said local resident Jane Doe. "They’re trying to make themselves look good, but it’s just a waste of taxpayer dollars."
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has faced criticism in the past for its handling of high-profile cases, and many are questioning whether the Twitter account will be used to further their own interests. "We’ll be keeping a close eye on this," said local journalist John Smith. "If they’re using Twitter to manipulate the public, we’ll be there to expose them."
The U.S. Attorney’s Office Twitter account is now live, and citizens are encouraged to follow along for updates on news, events, and special announcements. But as the old saying goes, "if it’s too good to be true, it probably is." Only time will tell if the U.S. Attorney’s Office Twitter account will be a success or a failure.
