CHILD ABUSE EPIDEMIC:
A Williston man has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for his role in the sexual exploitation of a minor and the production of child pornography.
Justin Allen Chavis, 27, was sentenced in Columbia, South Carolina after pleading guilty to the charges.
According to the FBI, Chavis engaged in sexual acts with two minor children and produced photographs and videos of the abuse, which he distributed through the internet. He also communicated with an undercover FBI agent over the internet, discussing past and future abuse of multiple children.
On April 2, 2020, the FBI obtained an arrest warrant and a federal search warrant for Chavis’s residence. He was arrested and has remained in custody since that day.
The investigation was led by the FBI, with critical assistance from the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Department of Social Services. Assistant United States Attorney Elliott B. Daniels prosecuted the case.
United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis sentenced Chavis to 324 months in federal prison, followed by 20 years of court-ordered supervision, restitution to be paid to two victims, and registration as a sex offender after release.
Chavis’s case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
