EL DORADO, AR – A former Arkansas law enforcement officer will spend nearly 13 years behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography. Justin Grant Crain, 38, of El Dorado, was sentenced to 148 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release on one count of knowing receipt of child pornography, a federal judge ruled today.
The case began to unravel in April of 2016 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children flagged suspicious activity: images of child pornography being uploaded to cloud storage linked to a specific phone number. The Arkansas State Police, along with the Department of Homeland Security, quickly zeroed in on Crain, who was then a Union County Sheriff’s Deputy – and a former El Dorado Police Officer.
A search warrant executed while Crain was on duty revealed over fifty images of child pornography on his cell phone. He was immediately arrested on federal charges – Accessing the Internet with the Intent to View Child Pornography and Receipt of Child Pornography – and swiftly terminated from his position with the Union County Sheriff’s Office. This wasn’t a momentary lapse; it was a calculated, repeated offense.
Investigators weren’t finished. A subsequent, more thorough search, conducted by the Arkansas State Police and the United States Secret Service, uncovered a horrifying cache of approximately 850 additional images of child pornography at Crain’s home. The sheer volume of depravity points to a deeply disturbing obsession. In June of 2016, a federal grand jury indicted Crain on federal charges, and he eventually pleaded guilty in March of 2017.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, involving the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Arkansas State Police Cybercrimes Unit, the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Secret Service, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arkansas Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin Wulff prosecuted the case, securing a sentence that, while substantial, barely scratches the surface of the damage inflicted on these vulnerable victims.
Crain’s sentencing serves as a grim reminder that predators can hide in plain sight, even behind a badge.
