A Salem man is facing federal charges after allegedly possessing a firearm in Harrison County in January 2017.
Justin Paul Crofford, 35, was indicted on one count of “Unlawful Possession of a Firearm” and one count of “Possession of an Unlawful Firearm” by a federal grand jury in Elkins, West Virginia.
The charges stem from an alleged crime in January 2017, in which Crofford is accused of possessing a 12-gauge shotgun. The indictment alleges that Crofford had previously been convicted of a felony in Smith County, Texas Circuit Court.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci M. Cook is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Anmoore Police Department are investigating.
An indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Crofford’s previous felony conviction in Smith County, Texas Circuit Court is a significant factor in the federal charges. The conviction makes it a federal crime for him to possess a firearm in West Virginia.
The case is ongoing and a trial date has not been set. Crofford remains free on bond pending his trial.
