Rockland County Man’s Fentanyl Trafficking Scheme Claims Lives
A 25-year-old Congers, New York man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute fentanyl that resulted in three fatal poisonings and three non-fatal poisonings between February 2020 and April 2022 in Rockland County.
Justin Turnick, 25, of Congers, New York, pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
According to the allegations in the Indictment, Turnick engaged in the regular distribution of narcotics to members of his community in Rockland County, including his friends, partners, and acquaintances. He knowingly distributed fentanyl, a deadly and highly potent opioid, in various forms, including fentanyl that had been packaged into pills, pure fentanyl, and fentanyl-laced powder.
The fentanyl distributed by Turnick resulted in the deaths of three individuals: Gustaf Olsen, Jonathan Shashoua, and Ione Koenig. Three others suffered non-fatal poisonings, including a female victim, a male victim, and Ione Koenig.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the work of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Clarkstown Police Department, and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Ramapo Police Department, the Westchester County Police Department, and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office for their support and assistance in the case.
The case is being prosecuted by the Office’s White Plains Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ryan W. Allison and Kathryn Wheelock are in charge of the prosecution.
