Kaden Lee, 35, Topeka Man, Used Federal Grant Funds as Shopping Money
A former employee of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has pleaded guilty to misapplying thousands of dollars in federal grant funds meant for the tribe’s benefit.
Kaden Lee, 35, of Topeka, Kansas, was charged with one count of misapplication of funds, a felony offense.
According to court documents, Lee misapplied over $40,000 in federal grant funds, which were intended to support economic development initiatives on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation reservation. Instead, Lee used the money to purchase sports memorabilia.
Lee’s scheme was uncovered during an investigation by the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Lee pleaded guilty to the charge on January 11, 2023. He is set to be sentenced on April 25, 2023, and faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is a federally recognized tribe located in eastern Kansas. The tribe receives millions of dollars in federal grant funds each year to support economic development, education, and healthcare initiatives.
