Kaleb Bridges, Hobbs Act Robbery and Use of a Firearm, Pennsylvania 2023

PHILADELPHIA, PA – A Philadelphia man is facing over a decade behind bars after a violent robbery at a Mayfair pizza parlor left two employees wounded. Kaleb Bridges, 20, was sentenced today to 166 months’ imprisonment – more than 13 years – and five years of supervised release by U.S. District Court Judge Gerald A. McHugh. Bridges pleaded guilty in December to Hobbs Act robbery and the use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

The brutal attack unfolded on the night of March 8, 2023, at the Mayfair Pizza restaurant on Frankford Avenue. According to court documents, Bridges stormed into the establishment just before closing, brandishing a gun and demanding cash. When the first employee, Victim #1, began to comply, Bridges ripped the bag from her grasp and immediately opened fire, striking her in the shoulder. She fell to the floor as Bridges continued to fire, hitting a refrigerator.

The restaurant’s owner, and Victim #1’s father, attempted to intervene, struggling with Bridges to prevent his escape with the stolen money. During the chaotic fight, Bridges’ weapon fell to the floor. He retrieved it and fired again, this time hitting the co-owner of the pizza parlor – Victim #2 – his wife. Only then were the employees able to subdue Bridges and hold him until the Philadelphia Police arrived.

Victim #1 was treated and released within hours, but Victim #2 endured weeks of hospitalization for her injuries. U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero stated, “Kaleb Bridges’ decision to rob this family business at gunpoint and shoot two members of that family was life-changing for the victims…It’s also changed the course of Bridges’ life, which, for the next decade-plus, will be lived locked away in prison.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Philadelphia Field Division played a key role in the investigation, partnering with the Philadelphia Police Department. Eric J. DeGree, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF division, emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating armed robberies and utilizing forensic tools to secure federal prosecution. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel condemned the “brazen violence” and praised the collaborative effort that led to Bridges’ conviction.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by small business owners and the consequences of escalating violence in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. The full weight of the law has come down on Kaleb Bridges, but the scars of this night will remain with the victims for years to come.
