TRENTON, N.J. – Matthew Kaminsky, 50, of Matawan, New Jersey, has confessed to a sickening crime: receiving images of child sexual abuse. The Monmouth County resident pleaded guilty today in federal court to one count of receiving child pornography, a charge that carries a hefty penalty. Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced the guilty plea, a small victory in a dark corner of the internet.
Court documents reveal a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior. Kaminsky allegedly targeted underage girls through online chat applications, initially exchanging nude images of himself. But his actions escalated in late January 2015 when he began communicating with a 13-year-old girl. He allegedly manipulated her into taking and sending nude pictures of herself – a clear act of exploitation and abuse.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, uncovered a trove of illicit material. In March 2015, law enforcement officers seized computer equipment from Kaminsky’s residence, finding images and videos depicting child sexual abuse. The 13-year-old victim was subsequently located and interviewed, confirming Kaminsky’s predatory actions. She stated she had sent the images at his request.
This isn’t just about images; it’s about the devastating impact on vulnerable children. Kaminsky’s actions represent a profound betrayal of trust and a horrific abuse of power. The federal government is taking a firm stance against such exploitation, and this plea serves as a warning to others who prey on innocent victims.
Kaminsky now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, with a minimum mandatory sentence of five years. He could also be fined $250,000 and subjected to a lifetime of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for June 28, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Mary L. Cooper. Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly S. Lorber is prosecuting the case.
Special Agent in Charge Terence S. Opiola of Homeland Security Investigations and Acting Inspector in Charge John Walker of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Philadelphia Division, were instrumental in building this case. Their dedication to protecting children and bringing perpetrators to justice is commendable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing.
