URBANA, Ill. – A Bourbonnais couple, Raymond and Angie Adamee, have been handed a tough sentence for their brazen attempt to swindle the IRS and the State of Illinois out of millions.
The owners of Kankakee Plaza Liquors, located at 1623 E. Court St., were each sentenced today to 12 months in prison, followed by 12 months of home confinement, for under-reporting income on their tax returns over a four-year period. The total restitution ordered is a staggering $642,736.
Raymond Adamee, 53, will serve his sentence first, surrendering to the federal Bureau of Prisons on December 1, 2020. His wife, Angie Adamee, 51, has been ordered to report on January 4, 2022.
The couple pleaded guilty on February 10, 2020, to under-reporting gross receipts from their business by approximately $1.6 million. This deceitful practice resulted in a failure to pay $409,117 in federal income tax and an additional $233,619 in state taxes.
In 2017, the IRS stumbled upon the tax fraud when the Adamees tried to sell their business for $600,000. An IRS undercover agent uncovered the discrepancy between the reported income and the sale advertisement. A subsequent search warrant at the couple’s residence and business turned up tens of thousands of dollars in cash hidden away.
The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugene L. Miller representing the government during the prosecution.
