La Crosse, WI – Kareem Nellem, 30, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 46 months for possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction. Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson handed down the sentence Wednesday, adding a 3-year term of supervised release following Nellem’s incarceration.
The case began March 30, 2022, when the La Crosse Police Department raided Nellem’s residence as part of a drug investigation. Officers discovered a 9mm handgun tucked away in a dresser. But the evidence didn’t stop there. Investigators quickly uncovered a Snapchat video posted by Nellem on the same day of the search, clearly showing him brandishing two firearms. The gun found in his home matched one of the weapons in the online video.
Nellem’s DNA was a dead giveaway, recovered from the firearm itself. This wasn’t a first offense. Nellem was already prohibited from owning a gun due to a 2012 conviction for armed robbery with a firearm – a history of violence that clearly wasn’t enough to deter him. The feds weren’t buying any excuses.
Judge Peterson didn’t pull punches at sentencing, highlighting the fact that Nellem committed this latest crime while already under court supervision. The judge acknowledged Nellem’s potential for a better life, but stressed his demonstrated “potential for violence” outweighed any mitigating factors. A slap on the wrist wasn’t happening.
Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Taylor L. Kraus, brought the charge under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at curbing violent crime through collaborative efforts between federal, state, and local agencies. The La Crosse Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) jointly investigated the case.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder: convicted felons attempting to possess firearms will face serious federal consequences. The 46-month sentence sends a clear message – illegal gun possession won’t be tolerated, especially when coupled with a history of armed robbery. The streets of La Crosse, and beyond, are a little safer with Nellem behind bars.
