Baltimore Heroin Dealer Linked to 27 Overdoses
A Baltimore heroin dealer has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a heroin distribution conspiracy that led to 27 overdoses, including nine fatalities.
Karon Elijah Peoples, 24, of Baltimore, Maryland, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett on [date] for his involvement in the heroin distribution conspiracy.
According to the investigation, Peoples was responsible for distributing or facilitating the distribution of between 9 and 10 kilograms of heroin. In addition, Peoples admitted that nine fatal overdose victims and 18 overdose survivors had contacted Peoples’ phones prior to their overdose to arrange for the purchase of heroin.
The investigation, which was conducted by the DEA’s Baltimore District Office, the Harford County Narcotics Task Force, and other local and federal agencies, revealed that Peoples was part of the conspiracy from at least May 2015 until his arrest in January 2018.
During the investigation, law enforcement recovered 900 grams of heroin, $405,156 in cash, a Rolex watch, a money counter, and digital scales and other drug paraphernalia from Peoples’ residence and a stash location in Baltimore.
Peoples was arrested on January 9, 2018, and law enforcement seized a total of 49 cellular phones from Peoples and the search locations. A court-authorized search of the phones revealed hundreds of text messages between Peoples, his co-conspirator, and his customers arranging for the acquisition, purchase, and sale of heroin.
As a result of the investigation, law enforcement found links between cases involving a total of 27 overdose victims, including nine who died as a result of the overdose and 18 who survived.
United States Attorney Robert K. Hur commended the DEA, the Harford County Narcotics Task Force, and other agencies involved in the investigation, stating that heroin dealers like Peoples sell death and despair, and that the federal government will continue to work with local and state partners to attack the problem of heroin overdose deaths.
