KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Mo., man has been locked up for a staggering nine years and two months after he was caught with his hands in the till of a murder victim’s firearm.
Alfred C. Crater, Jr., 40, faced U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs today for his despicable act of stealing a Hi-Point .40-caliber pistol from Anthony Wayne Van Buren, a man who met an untimely end on Feb. 19, 2012.
Crater’s crime didn’t stop with the murder – he waited for police to arrive before making off with the weapon. His brazen act was thwarted when law enforcement officials apprehended him near Linwood and Indiana in Kansas City, Mo., and found the stolen pistol in his possession.
This isn’t Crater’s first brush with the law. The convicted felon has nine felony convictions to his name, including a prior federal conviction for being a feloon with a firearm. At the time of this crime, he was on state probation – a status that won’t save him from the federal penitentiary.
Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Michael Green prosecuted the case, while the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation.
Crater’s sentence sends a chilling message that theft from a murder victim is no small-time offense, and justice will be served to those who dishonor the memory of fallen victims.
