KC Felon Sentenced to 9 Years for Illegal Firearms
Kansas City, MO – A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in federal prison for illegally possessing two firearms, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri.
Leon D. Stinnett, 28, was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Greg Kays for being a felon in possession of two firearms. Stinnett had pleaded guilty to the charge, admitting to possessing a Jimenez 9mm pistol and a Glock .40-caliber pistol on November 2, 2013.
According to the indictment, Stinnett was driving a 2003 Honda Accord when he attempted to flee from police officers to elude arrest. He was found a short time later at a location under police surveillance, where he was arrested and his vehicle was searched. The loaded Jimenez 9mm pistol was found in the driver’s seat, and the loaded Glock .40-caliber pistol was found in the trunk.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Stinnett has two prior felony convictions for burglary and a prior felony conviction for robbery.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rudolph R. Rhodes, IV, and was investigated by the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
