MEMPHIS, TN – Kedric Reese, 21, will spend the next 13 years in federal prison for a violent carjacking that escalated into an attempted murder. The sentence, handed down on February 14, 2023, by U.S. Chief Judge Sheryl H. Lipman, reflects the gravity of Reese’s actions on May 24, 2021, and the danger he posed to the victim.
The incident unfolded at the River Grove apartments. The victim, driving a rental car, briefly stopped near Warford and Jackson Avenue to send a text. That’s when Reese and another individual, driving a white Impala, pulled up beside her. They demanded she drive them to River Grove, and Reese immediately brandished a firearm, visible and menacing.
Terrified, the victim complied. Upon arrival at River Grove, Reese again pointed the gun at her, ordering her out of the vehicle. As she exited, the victim boldly declared, “I know what you look like!” Reese responded by firing a shot directly at her. Fortunately, the victim wasn’t seriously injured, but the act clearly demonstrated a callous disregard for human life.
The rental car company quickly tracked the stolen vehicle to a residence on Rio Lobo in Memphis. When authorities arrived, they found Reese in possession of the rental car and, critically, a stolen SAR 9mm pistol. The weapon was fully loaded – 12 rounds in the magazine and one round chambered, ready to fire. The victim positively identified Reese as her attacker.
The investigation, a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Memphis Police Department, quickly connected Reese to the crime. U.S. Attorney Kevin G. Ritz praised Assistant U.S. Attorney Raney Irwin for their prosecution of the case and the collaborative work of law enforcement. Reese was sentenced to 157 months – 13 years and one month – in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Unlike state systems, there is no parole in the federal system, meaning Reese will serve the entirety of his sentence.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the commitment of federal agencies to pursuing justice. The ATF’s Nashville Field Division played a key role in securing this conviction. Reese’s actions weren’t just a theft; they were a brazen act of violence that nearly cost a woman her life, and now he’ll have over a decade to contemplate that fact behind bars.
